FLOOD WATER CONCERNS FOR PRIVATE WATER SYSTEMS

Have you been flooded?
Be sure to disinfect your well and have your water tested!

(Leominster, MA –April 6, 2010) During a flood, all wells (drilled or shallow) are at risk of contamination. When flood water rises over the top of the well, contaminants can enter through the well cap or vent and increase the risk of illness. Flood water contains bacteria and viruses from soil, organic debris, and sewage systems along with fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemical contaminants.

The sources most at risk of being vulnerable to contaminated surface water entering the well are shallow wells, drilled wells that do not have a sanitary cap on them and/or wells that are not 18” to 24” above the ground.

Whenever widespread flooding occurs there is potential for bacterial contamination. Therefore, a well that has been flooded MUST be disinfected and tested in order to ensure the safety of the drinking water and the health and well being of those relying on it. Homeowners are encouraged to inspect their water source to determine if there may be conditions present that would make their water source vulnerable to pollution and possible contamination. If these conditions are present and you suspect that your well may be contaminated contact Environmental Testing and Research Laboratories at 1.800.344.9977, info@etrlabs.com or www.etrlabs.com.

In an effort to help those who have been affected by the current flooding devastation that has hit New England, we are currently offering flood victims a discount of 25% of any water testing or well disinfection.
